Referee Mentoring

  • Referee Mentor Form
Use this Google form for your young referee observations / mentoring during the soccer season!
  • Implementation
Prior to the season, contact the local town referee coordinator(s) and introduce yourself and explain what it is you hope to do. (Their contact info is available at risrc.us. Click on the “GAME TIME” tab, then select assignors.) Ask for their assistance in determining what matches their young officials will be working. Prior to each match, email the young officials that you plan to observe. (Always cc the local coordinator when you do, since one-on-one contact with a minor must involve another adult.) Let the official know that you would like to provide on-field instruction and that you plan to attend their match.
  • Referee Mentor Objective
To help in the development and partial assessment of young Grassroots soccer referees, in particular those with between zero and two years of experience
  • When you get to the field
1.) Please wear your mentor jersey, if possible.2.) Introduce yourself to the home and away coaches, if they do not know you already.3.) Observe the referees, get their names at halftime or before the game, tell them that you are there to help and give pointers. Be positive and encouraging when making suggestions and recommendations. Write up some pointers and suggestions and give them to the referee with your name & email address, also your phone number, if you want.
  • Referee Mentor Program
The program has three result-oriented goals: 1.) First and foremost, to assist the referees in their development by giving suggestions and advice.2.) To help evaluate the referee to determine their current level of competency. 3.) To give the local referee coordinator your objective evaluations of the referees observed.
  • After your Mentor Visit
After your mentor visit, go to the risrc.us website and fill out the mentor observation form. In addition, email feedback on the officials to the local referee coordinator. For each mentor observation form you submit, you will be credited $20 toward your referee recertification fee, until the total cost of your fee has been achieved.
