Referee Uniform & Equipment

The purpose of this guideline is to establish the standard for proper appearance of referees while officiating Rhode Island games. Requirements for out-of-state matches may differ.Your appearance as a referee sends a message to players, coaches, spectators and your fellow referees. That first impression is vital. If you expect to command respect you must look and act professional!
In order to promote a professional appearance by all referees statewide, all new referees should purchase a complete referee uniform set, which includes a gold jersey, shorts, and socks. If you wish to consider purchasing a second alternate shirt color, the RISRC suggests Black as the optimal choice. Footwear: Referees are expected to wear athletic footwear which is primarily black in color. White footwear is NEVER permitted. Cleats, turf shoes, or running shoes are all appropriate provided they are black. If you need a referee patch (because you lost it or never received it) please go to this Google Form: https://forms.gle/Y92Ztw7nhk7mUVa7A Referee Uniforms: The RISRC suggests purchasing referee uniforms from Official Sports (https://officialsports.com). It is suggested that you purchase the following:1. A yellow shirt (either long or short sleeve, your preference)2. Black socks3. Black shorts4. A whistle and a set of flags5. A set of Yellow/Red cardsOther items that may be useful would be a second color shirt (we suggest Black), match report forms (for inside the Yellow/Red card holders), and a duffel bag.If you are under 13 years old and wish to begin officiating Recreational games, please contact your local Referee Coordinator. The list can be found by clicking the [Game Time!] tab (at the top of this window) and click on “Assignors”.
